Wood (timber) has been widely used in the construction of houses for many years. Therefore; roof voids, ceilings, floors, stairs, walls, skirting boards etc. are all potential feeding grounds for wood-boring beetles, more commonly known as woodworm.
Woodworm can significantly weaken timbers causing floors and ceilings etc. to ultimately collapse. When infestation feeds on timber lintels over doors and windows etc. there is a risk of structural damage and even collapse of the main walls which they support.
With woodworm present, you may notice holes with clean, sharp edges, sometimes with fine dust (the bore dust) on or below timbers. You may even see a network of exposed tunnels on timber surfaces, especially where dampness is, or has been present.
Accurate identification of the type of beetle present is essential for the correct treatment to be applied. Failure to do so can lead to unnecessary expense and, for the environment, the use of chemicals when not required. Also, if incorrect treatments are carried out, the infestation can simply continue to cause damage throughout your property.
